Xiaolong Ma is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering @ The University of Arizona. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University (NEU), Boston in 2022, supervised by Professor Yanzhi Wang.
His research develops scalable, efficient, and trustworthy artificial intelligence, with a particular emphasis on computer vision and large language models. One major direction of his work develops learning algorithms, optimization methods, and theoretical foundations that enable machine learning systems to operate effectively under computational, communication, and data constraints. A second research direction centers on trustworthy AI, developing privacy-preserving, safe, and controllable learning methods for generative models. His research has applications spanning edge and mobile computing, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, wireless communications and networking, and intelligent manufacturing.
His research has been published in leading venues, including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, Oakland, CCS, ASPLOS, ISCA, MICRO, DAC, and TPAMI. He received the Best Paper Award at ICLR HAET 2021, Contributed Article in CACM, Best Paper Nominations at SenSys 2024 and ISQED 2018, and several Highlight/Spotlight papers in NeurIPS and CVPR. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award.
